The city of Oulu, in preparation for its role as the European Capital of Culture in 2026, has been enriched with a mural that celebrates the natural beauty and unique character of the city and its surroundings. The artwork combines key elements of the local landscape and flora into a composition that not only beautifies the area but also serves as a lasting symbol of Oulu’s cultural and natural heritage.
Fabio Petani was selected from a pool of around 500 artists by a jury to create this mural. At the center of the piece are the stylized waters of the Oulujoki River, which flows through the city and has played a vital role in its history. The river is depicted with flowing currents, symbolizing the life that moves through Oulu, connecting the city’s past, present, and future, while linking nature, culture, and the people with their land.
In the foreground, flowers such as Achillea Millefolium, Sorbus Aucuparia, and Lathyrus tuberosus adorn the mural. These plants were chosen not just for their beauty, but for their symbolic meanings. Achillea Millefolium represents the resilience and strength of the Oulu community, while Sorbus Aucuparia, with its bright red berries, evokes vitality and the connection to the northern wilderness. Lathyrus tuberosus, with its deep roots and colorful flowers, symbolizes the importance of cultural roots and traditions.
The mural’s vibrant yet balanced colors reflect the energy and vitality of a city that is constantly growing, while maintaining respect for its natural surroundings. Harmony, a central theme in the work, is represented through the use of circles, a simple form that evokes balance and continuity, integrating all the natural elements in the mural.
Each detail in the mural was inspired by photographs the artist took during histime in Oulu, which were then adapted into a composition that captures the essence of the area’s natural beauty. This piece is more than just decoration; it is a lasting tribute to the city, preserving the spirit of Oulu’s nature for future generations.
