The Ugly Duckling by Ernest Zhacharevic 2024-09-25

The Ugly Duckling by Ernest Zhacharevic

After taking the long trip from Penang (Malaysia), where Lithuanian Ernest Zacharevic is living today, he visited the city of Aalborg in Denmark and presented his new mural in collaboration with Kirk Gallery.

Renowned around the world for an expression, often in pale colours with motives of playing children interacting with the environment, Ernest Zacharevic spent the first week taking in the city of Aalborg and its surroundings, before deciding on a finale theme.

At the mural, raising above the parking space downtown Aalborg, we’ll now find a large origami swan folded in an old Danish banknote from 1952, with the portrait of H.C. Andersen on it.

Holding on to the neck of the swan, a little girl is sitting in its wings as in a tiny paper nest.

About the mural the artist tells the following:

“I have always been fascinated by the adventures of H. C. Andersen. When Denmark brought ‘The little Mermaid’ to the World Expo in China, I remember feeling completely intrigued by how a public piece of art becomes that significant a symbol for a country. Hence, getting the opportunity to go to Denmark, made me think a lot about this.”
