Kas Art

Born and raised in Porto and currently based in Brussels, KAS is a wild spirit that grew up in an artistic family and has broken barriers to show his style in street art. We are proud to bring you this interview with a person that mixes realism and puzzle patterns giving a 3D effect to his works. Enjoy!

(ISSA) – What you choose to drink? Coffee, Tea, Beer, Soda or something else?

– Introduce yourself to us:
Portuguese graffiti artist based in Brussels.

– Where does your tag name come from?
It comes from a group of friends who joined up every day at a place called kastalia in Porto , Portugal. And also Kastalia Assault Systems.

-How do you define yourself? Artist? Street artist? Anything else
It is a difficult question because one day I can paint a large mural on the other do an exhibition and after do an installation or produce a video.

– How did it all start for you, and what is it nowadays?
As a child I had the addition to draw at home, at school and everywhere influenced of my father who also drawed and painted .In 1999 I found in the street a full spray can and tagged everywhere until I got home. Then I told the story to a friend and he told me about graffiti and gave me a book called Subway graffiti that inspired me to paint Kas everywhere. Nowadays everything is different, the graffiti world is inside a rectangle but the passion of graffiti continues more than ever.

-What is the first thing you do when you get up in the morning?
Trying to remember which project i dreamt of and register it to paint it in the future:)

-Street art is mostly a visually stimulating form of art. To add one more sense to it, what music would you pick to accompany your art work?
Hip hop , deep house , chill out…

-In all forms of art, inspiration is crucial. What inspires you?
All there is around me. From an advertisment to a conversation between friends.

-What is the hardest part for you, while working on a piece of art?
I cant smoke when I have the mask in my face 🙂 The weather conditions sometimes 40 degrees an sometimes as low as 5c.

-Do you have an artists you admire and what for?
I admire all artists who continue to do what they love and transmit their ideas on the streets.

-Which cities do you think are the most inspirational in Street Art?
Any large city is a source of inspiration but one of the cities that i admire maybe Paris.

-Do you have other passions apart from art?
Nature, footbal, traveling and meeting new cultures.

-Do you have a wild project that you dream of achieving some day?
Continue to spread my art around the world.

-Tell us about your art, does it include symbolisms, messages or repeated patterns?
Usually I try to pass a message political, social, economic and each one understands it the way they want. Recently I have explored puzzle patterns with my ideas. Maybe I found something that identifies my art in a question of seconds…

– How long time do your works usually survive for?
They can survive years or days, thats graffiti.

-What do you believe people first think, or feel, when they your work on the street?
It depends on each graffiti work and each person but whatever the reaction the most important is that I could pass my message.

I am organizing my next graffiti tour for 2016. But I think i wont talk about it now. Stay tuned.
