Suprise! We talk to the creator of the ‘Trash Animals’. The talented Portuguese artist who creates, recreates, assembles and develops ideas with end-of-life material. In this way he relates us to sustainability, ecological and social awareness! Meet Mr Bordalo II.

-Introduce yourself to us!

Hey i am Bordalo, the Second!

– Where does your tag name come from?
My grandfather he´s the first Bordalo, I´m the second one…

-How do you define yourself? Artist? Street artist? Anything else?
Artist, activist

– How did it all start for you, and what is it nowadays?
It started even before the start. My background it is graffiti, I mean the real one, illegal and funny, but as I spent my whole youth doing it, than I wanted to make something else, using the street knowledge as tools and inspiration on my daily experiences.

 

-Street Art is mostly a visually stimulating form of art. To add one more sense to it, what music would you pick to accompany your art work?

I can listen to so many kinds of music, its hard to tell you what cause its too vast.

-In all forms of art, inspiration is crucial. What is it that inspires you?

Im inspired by the real world.

-What is the hardest part while working on a piece of art?

To have it done and feel that´s done.

-Do you have an artist(s) you admire and what for?
Spy, farewell, dran, pawel kuczynski, vik muniz, and few more geniuses

-Which cities are the most inspiring for you?
My favourite city is Lisbon, but I can get inspiration everywhere, by positive or negative aspects.

-What other passions do you have apart from art?
My biggest passion is the nature itself.

-Do you have a wild project that you dream of achieving some day?
I have so many wild ideas, i will do them all as i have time!

-Tell us about your art, does it include symbolism, messages or repeated patterns?
“Big Trash Aninals”: Big Trash Animals is a series of artworks that aims to draw attention to a current problem that is likely to be forgotten, become trivial or a necessary evil. The problem involves waste production, materials that are not reused, pollution and its effect on the planet.

The idea is to depict nature itself, in this case animals, out of materials that are responsible for its destruction. These works are built with end-of-life materials: the majority found in wastelands, abandoned factories or randomly and some are obtained from companies that are going through a recycling process.

Damaged bumpers, burnt garbage cans, tires and appliances are just some of the objects that can be identified when you go into detail. They are camouflaging the result of our habits with little ecological and social awareness.

– How long time does a piece of art work of yours usually survive for?
About 3 – 7 days.

-What do people first think, or feel, when they see one of your works on the street?
Im not in people´s mind, but i hope that they can see behind a colorful image.

-Do you have a secret you would like to share with us?

Than it wouldn’t be a secret anymore.

-What are your creative plans for the future?
Secrets!

-Is there a specific thought or message you would like to pass to our audience out there?
