VICTIMS OF CIRCUMSTANCE

April 13, 2017 to April 20, 2017

Berlin based UK artist Wasp Elder first London solo show at 5th Base Gallery in Shoreditch

Upon leaving their space in Dalston, the 1963 Gallery has set in motion their vision of a constantly moving gallery. In the next few months 1963 Gallery will inhabit spaces temporarily to reflect on the dynamics of the evolving city and enhance the creativity when it comes to exhibition making. The journey begins with painter and street artist Sam Worthington aka WASP ELDER who curated the Empty Walls festival in Cardiff alongside The Abacus gallery with his soul mate and fellow artist Helen Bur. For his inaugural show WASP ELDER will be presenting a new body of work, never seen before.

The exhibition will be a set of images depicting the world as a historical fog, political haze and societal mist. Wasp Elder will exhibit canvases populated by enigmatic souls and unstressed backgrounds, inviting a sentiment of an obscure journey. His drawings, paintings and films present an evocative combination of solitary figures, collaged scenes, close-ups, obscured features, and allude to potential catastrophes. Set at tension by external forces, these silent outsiders set on a theatrical stage are simultaneously perpetrators and victims of unclear disasters.

Revealed through a collage of found images and painted compositions, each painting marks a moment that is ambiguous in both cause and consequence, with the passage of time obscuring the memory of past and future circumstances. Often in a state of process, action, and ritual or past the point of no return, each piece invites the viewer to contemplate the still, tense scene within the given context.
