The book ‘LAPIZ – Walls – Posters – Installations’ is a retrospective of the artist’s street art interventions around the globe. Featuring many popular motives as well as some unpublished works.Lapiz is a HIV-researcher turned stencil artist who paints socio-critical murals in the streets. He draws inspiration from the sharp contrast of living conditions, social issues and the cultural barriers between the third and first world.
He started painting socio-critical posters in the streets of Dunedin (New Zealand) as a vent to overcome the cultural shock originating from moving there from South Africa. Later, while living in Buenos Aires (Argentina), he developed his own style of painting huge, thought-provoking stencils.
Here, he presents his first book ‘Lapiz: walls – posters – installations‘. It offers a retrospective of his street art interventions around the globe and features many popular motives as well as some unpublished works of the recent years.
What makes this book special, are the short texts that complement each motive. Not only do they contain a precise description but are also composed of the artist’s thoughts and ideas. This allows an insight into Lapiz’ mind and his thought process but also pokes the reader to contemplate their own ideas and thus offering a dialogue between the artist and the observer.
