Commissioned by PARK MGM, Spanish artist Okuda San Miguel and global curator Justkids returned to Las Vegas to bring to life “Mother Natura”, an installation composed of 3 sculptures and a mural, inspired by the legend of Mayahuel, the Mexican goddess of agave and fertility.
Located at Mama Rabbit, the newest bar of the luxury resort, Mother Natura is composed by a large-scale mural rendition of goddess Mayahuel looking down upon a valley with agave in the artist’s acclaimed pop surrealistic visual language. The lower register of the work is completed by three hand painted fiberglass sculptures rendering two slot machines embedded deers and, at the center, a throne in the shape of a bunny towering above at 16’ feet. Together, the triptych explores the relationship between nature’s mystical elements and the creative role of feminine power, in all its strength and vulnerability, a recurrent theme in the artist body of work.
Developed, curated and produced by Justkids, Mother Natura is not the first collaboration between the global creative house and the Spanish artist, who have produced together some of the
most prominent public art undertakings in the US during the last 2 years, including “Air, Sea and Land” , a vibrant kaleidoscope of seven large-scale sculptures on Seaport Boulevard in Boston and the recent Rainbow Embassy in Northwest Arkansas.
“I am delighted to create this new body of work and to have fulfilled this collaboration, in partnership with global creative house Justkids, for the prestigious MGM Resorts Fine Art Collection” said the artist, Okuda San Miguel, about the collaboration. He continues; “I was immediately drawn and inspired by the strong visual traditions of indigenous cultures and the women of Mexico.”Justkids founder and curator Charlotte Dutoit commented.
“Working with Park MGM on this unique artwork was fantastic. As for collaborating with Okuda, he is simply game for any artistic challenge. Everytime Justkids has brought him a new
project to the table, he was not only keen but able to accomplish them with a unique vision and mastery.” Okuda’s artwork is the most recent addition to the ever-growing MGM Resorts Fine Art Collection defined by internationally renowned artists including Picasso, Maya Lin, David Hockney, Jenny Holzer, Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen, Ugo Rondinone, Henrique Oliveira and many others.
Justkids captured the entire creative process from the artist’s studio in Madrid to the installation in Las Vegas Strip in a short video piece narrated by Okuda San Miguel.
