In our latest interview we speak with Venezuelan artist KOZ DOS, an adventurer duet, Martin and Nikyta, who travel the world communicating through exceptional creations on urban surfaces. Having evolved from the streets of Caracas, Martin shares with us his thoughts and dreams. Inspired mainly by nature his works drive imagination to its infinity offering viewers growth, respect, self-knowledge and empathy!

-Please introduce yourself to us!

Hello friends, I am Martin from KOZ DOS originally from Caracas-Venezuela, working along with his wife and adventure partner, Nikyta. It is a pleasure to be here sharing a little of ourselves with you, thank you very much for the invitation and for your great work, THANK YOU.

-How do you define yourself? Artist? Street artist? Anything else?

Firstly, I define myself as an ordinary person who tries to see things differently and is open to learning every day. And second, a visual communicator that is constantly evolving and expanding, who tries to do work as close and sincere as possible, some call me an artist, muralist, creator of ideas.

-How did it all start for you and what is it like today?

It all started as a child, very young, I always liked to draw and do things with my hands, I was surrounded by an environment that was not purely artistic but I was very creative and adventurous, that made me grow without limits and my imagination and creativity always I was curious, but it wasn’t until I left high school that I dared to go out on the street to paint my first lines. Venturing into the world of graffiti, for a while I was painting alone, it was a time of a lot of learning and adventures, then I started to paint with some good friends that I met along the way, I started like every graffiti artist usually starts in Latin America, you paint in your neighborhood, then in other neighborhoods, other cities, other countries and other continents. In my beginnings I painted bombs, letters and caricatures, then I began to focus more and more on the characters, later, when I started painting in neighboring countries, the invitations to Europe began and that was where another stage began for me. Each time they began to know more about the work and more invitations arose from different European countries and cities in the United States. The work began to evolve in a constant way, going from painting graffiti to painting murals, from working with only spray to painting with mixed technique, even painting some murals only with acrylic paint.

The work gradually became more formal in every sense, I grew technically and theoretically the work solidified, delving into topics that I did not take into account in my beginnings, along the way some people began to request our work, venturing into the creation of canvases, exhibitions and collaborations began to emerge in different parts of the world. Today we are residing in Europe, working on mural projects, developing canvases for exhibitions and collections, at the same time, we continue to nourish our personal and plastic research without putting limits on our horizons.

-What is the first thing you do when you get up in the morning?

Thank God for another day of life and having the opportunity to build my future.

-Street art is primarily a visually stimulating art form. To give it more meaning, what music would you choose to accompany your artwork?

Yes, art in general is stimulating, it awakens the senses without realizing it and without asking our permission, it is sublime. Wow, I usually listen to all kinds of music, Rap, funk, electronic, rock, classical music, salsa, merengue, instrumental music, I usually listen to what my ears like, without judgment, but I think the music I like the most is classical and instrumental music, I like how through sounds you can experience different sensations, without words, without intentions, is magical.

-In all forms of art, inspiration is crucial. What inspires you?

Nature and everything that makes it up, nature has a beauty that man recreates and reproduces, but it is not capable of equaling, the majesty and elegance that nature has is amazing, it is incredible to see so many things that are created and designed inspired in nature and animals, from colors, textures, shapes, etc. Without forgetting the aspects of functionality and adaptability, it is incredible how much we can learn and still have to learn from it.

-What is the most difficult part for you when working on a piece of art?

I tend to be very critical and demanding of myself, I think the most difficult part for me and what I have learned to deal with is when I finish a work, since I don’t usually see it as finished, because as I create and develop it I see that more possibilities open up, more ideas come to mind, I see that I can add things or work on certain things in a different way. The positive thing about this is that the following works are inspired by the previous ones, seeking to go further and further depending on the work and research, the other positive thing is that these new ideas will be implemented in the following creations, making the work self-feeding.

-Do you have any artists you admire and why?

I usually admire ordinary people or people who are not directly related to art, my father, mother and grandmother are my top, my father is an incredible thing, an unimaginable creative is my favorite. Then on a direct artistic level, I greatly admire the artists of the Renaissance, I couldn’t tell you why I like them so much, what you like has no exact explanation and that happens to me with the Renaissance, I love them, I greatly admire their imagery and their artistic contributions and revolutionaries that they gave to the following generations, I love to see works of the Renaissance, all kinds of works, from painting, frescoes, sculptures, architecture, etc.

-Which cities do you think are the most inspiring for Street Art?

Of those that I know at the moment and I have had the most interaction: Paris, Berlin, Rome and Milan.

-Do you have other passions besides art?

The animals, the museums, the walks.

-What is the wildest project you dream of doing someday?

Painting several buildings that are very close to each other, I wanted to create a work in which the buildings interact with each other, allowing several readings, that each building is a work and that together they form a general work, it would be great.

-Does your art include symbolism, messages or repeated patterns?

Yes, it is an investigation that consists of many meanings and an important symbolic load, as I mentioned previously, it is a work that is constantly feeding on itself both theoretically and plastically, leading me to concerns that I had not considered years ago.

There are many aspects that I personally like to work on in the works such as plasticity, concept, shape, color and geometry, breaking down each of these aspects according to what the work asks for at the time, it is a language that is has been creating gradually without limitations or logic and we are interested in constantly nurturing it, that is why we usually work on many aspects in a work, besides I love all these aspects I think that art is infinite, very extensive and that it constantly invites me to learn things about all kinds, the research never ends and we will not know what we will be doing in the coming years.

-How long do your works usually survive?

It depends on several factors, mainly the quality of the paint, exposure to the sun and rain, these factors are fundamental, but the quality of the materials is very important, I say this because the works that are on the street are made with good materials. They have an expiration time because they are outdoors and they will disappear over time.

A work with excellent materials can last many years, I have seen works that we have done years ago that are in good condition, intact even though they are more than 8 years old and this is thanks to the fact that we work with excellent materials and in other cases they last quite a long time. murals take a long time due to the location where the wall is located, locations where they are not exposed to direct sun for as long. On the other hand, if they are murals made with low quality materials, they can last a couple of years or less depending on the sun exposure to which the surface is subjected, especially in summer when the sun is usually more intense.

-What do you think people first think or feel when they see one of your works on the street?

Wow, what an interesting question, I really don’t know, and I hope you think or feel positive things which invite growth, respect, self-knowledge, empathy, we usually do all the works with the best intentions, we usually work based on our own work and art, but we do all this in a respectful way that invites us to unite and grow.

We know the impact that a work of art has on public spaces and it is a very big responsibility for all of us who intervene in these spaces, it is something that must be taken into consideration from the beginning to the end of each project, from my point of view. We cannot be so invasive or dictatorial since it is a work for everyone.

-Do you have any secrets that you would like to share with us?

I usually get up very early.

-What are your creative plans for the future?

At the moment we have several exhibitions scheduled this year and some projects will be underway soon, so we will be in the workshop giving shape to new ideas.

-Is there a specific thought or message you would like to convey to our audience?

Let them do whatever they want, whatever they want, but respecting other people and nature, let them do what they like and are passionate about, regardless of what others do, regardless of what others say, let them fall in love with life and that each path is different for each person, each path is unique and unmatched, the beautiful thing is that we can build our own path ourselves, it is up to us how beautiful we want it and with what materials we build it.

Hola amigos soy Martin de KOZ DOS originario de Caracas-Venezuela, es un placer estar aquí compartiendo un poco de nosotros con ustedes, muchas gracias por la invitación y por su grandioso trabajo, GRACIAS.

¿Cómo te defines a ti mismo? ¿Artista? ¿Artista de calle? ¿Algo más?

Primeramente, me defino como una persona común y corriente que intenta ver las cosas diferentes y esta abierto a aprender día a día. Y segundo, un comunicador visual que esta en constante evolución y expansión, que intenta hacer un trabajo lo mas cercano y sincero posible, unos me dicen artista, muralista, creador de ideas.

¿Cómo empezó todo para ti y qué es hoy en día?

Todo empezó desde niño, muy niño, siempre me gusto dibujar y hacer cosas con las manos, estuve rodeado de un ambiente que no era netamente artístico pero si era muy creativo y aventurero, eso hizo que creciera sin limitantes y que mi imaginación y creatividad siempre fuera curiosa, pero no fue hasta salir de la escuela secundaria que me atreví a salir a la calle a pintar mis primeras líneas incursionando en el mundo del graffiti, por un tiempo estuve pintado solo, fue un momento de mucho aprendizaje y aventuras, luego empecé a pintar con algunos buenos amigos que fui conociendo en el camino, inicie como todo graffitero suele iniciar en Latino America, pintas en tu barrio, luego en otros barios, otras ciudades, otros países y otros continentes, en mis inicios pintaba bombas, letras y caricaturas, luego fui enfocándome cada vez mas en los personajes, mas tarde, cuando empecé a pintar en los países vecinos empezaron las invitaciones a Europa y allí fue donde otra etapa empezó para mi, cada vez empezaron a conocer mas el trabajo y surgieron mas invitaciones de diferentes países europeos y ciudades de los Estados Unidos, el trabajo empezó a evolucionar de una manera constante pasando de pintar graffiti a pintar murales, de trabajar con solo spray a pintar con técnica mixta, llegando incluso a pintar algunos murales solo con pintura acrílica, el trabajo fue convirtiéndose paulatinamente mas formal en todos los sentidos, fui creciendo técnicamente y teóricamente el trabajo se fue solidificando adentrándome en temáticas que no tenia en cuenta en mis inicios, en el camino algunas personas empezaron a solicitar nuestro trabajo incursionando en la realización de canvases, empezaron a surgir exposiciones en diferentes partes del mundo y colaboraciones, hoy en día estamos residiendo en Europa, trabajando en proyectos de murales, desarrollando canvases para exposiciones y colecciones, a su vez, seguimos nutriendo nuestra investigación personal y plástica sin poner limites a nuestro horizontes.

¿Qué es lo primero que haces al levantarte por la mañana?

Dar gracias a dios por un nuevo día mas de vida y tener la oportunidad de construir mi futuro.

El arte callejero es principalmente una forma de arte visualmente estimulante. Para darle un sentido más, ¿qué música elegirías para acompañar tu obra de arte?

Si, el arte en general es estimulante, despierta los sentidos sin darnos cuenta y sin pedirnos permiso, es sublime. Wow, suelo escuchar todo tipo de música, Rap, funk, electrónica, rock, música clásica, salsa, merengue, música instrumental, suelo escuchar lo que a mis oídos les guste, sin juicios, pero creo que la música que mas me gusta es la música clásica e instrumental, me gusta como por medio de sonidos puedes experimentar diferentes sensaciones, sin palabras, sin intensiones, es mágico.

En todas las formas de arte, la inspiración es crucial. ¿Que te inspira?

La naturaleza y todo lo que la conforma, la naturaleza tiene una belleza que el hombre recrea y reproduce, pero no es capas de igualar, la majestuosidad y elegancia que tiene la naturaleza es asombrosa, es increíble ver tantas cosas que son creadas y diseñas inspiradas en la naturaleza y los animales, desde los colores, texturas, formas, etc. Sin olvidarnos de los aspectos de funcionalidad y adaptabilidad, es increíble de todo lo que podemos aprender y nos falta por aprender de ella.

¿Cuál es la parte más difícil para ti a la hora de trabajar en una obra de arte?

Suelo ser muy critico y exigente conmigo mismo, creo que la parte mas difícil para mi y que he aprendido a lidiar con ello, es cuando termino una obra, ya que no suelo verla como terminada, porque a medida que la voy creando y desarrollando veo que se abren mas posibilidades, se me ocurren mas ideas, veo que puedo agregar cosas o trabajar ciertas cosas de distinta manera, lo positivo de esto es que las siguientes obras se inspiran de las anteriores buscando ir cada vez mas allá en función al trabajo e investigación, lo otro positivo es que esas nuevas ideas, serán implementadas en las siguientes creaciones haciendo que el trabajo se autoalimente.

¿Tienes algún artista que admires y para qué?

Suelo admirar a personas comunes y corriente o que no están relacionadas con el arte directamente, mi padre, madre y abuela son mi top, mi padre es una cosa increíble, un creativo inimaginable es mi favorito. Luego a nivel artístico directo, admiro mucho a los artistas del renacimiento, no sabría decirte porque me gustan tanto, lo que te gusta no tiene explicación exacta y eso me pasa con el renacimiento, me encantan, admiro mucho su imaginario y sus aportes artísticos y revolucionarios que dieron a las siguientes generaciones, me encanta ver obras del renacimiento, todo tipo de obras, desde pintura, frescos, esculturas, arquitectura, etc.

¿Qué ciudades crees que son las más inspiradoras del Street Art?

De las que conozco por los momentos y he tenido mas interacción París, Berlin, Roma y Milán.

¿Tienes otras pasiones además del arte?

Los animales, los museos, las caminatas.

¿Cuál es el proyecto más salvaje que sueñas con realizar algún día?

Pintar varios edificios que estén muy cerca unos a otros, me guitaría crear una obra en la cual los edificios interactúen entre si, permitiendo varias lecturas, que cada edificio sea una obra y que juntos conformen una obra general, seria genial.

¿Tu arte incluye simbolismos, mensajes o patrones repetidos?

Si, es una investigación que consta de muchos significados y una carga simbólica importante, como lo mencione con anterioridad es un trabajo que constantemente se esta alimentando de si mismo tanto teórica como plásticamente, llevándome a inquietudes que no había considerado años atrás.

Hay muchos aspectos que personalmente me gustan trabajar en las obras como lo son la plasticidad, el concepto, la forma, el color y la geometría, desglosando cada uno de estos aspectos según lo que pida la obra en su momento, es un lenguaje que se ha ido creando paulatinamente sin limitaciones ni lógica y que nos interesa nutrirlo constantemente, por eso solemos trabajar muchos aspectos en una obra, a parte me encantan todos estos aspectos pienso que el arte es infinito, muy extenso y que constantemente me invita a aprender cosas de todo tipo, la investigación nunca termina y no sabremos que estaremos haciendo los años próximos.

¿Cuánto tiempo suelen sobrevivir tus obras?

Depende de varios factores, principalmente la calidad de la pintura, la exposición al sol y la lluvia, esos factores son fundamentales, pero la calidad de los materiales es muy importante, lo digo porque las obras que están en la calle sean realizadas con buenos materiales tienen un tiempo de caducidad debido a que están en la intemperie y si o si desaparecerán con el tiempo.

Una obra con excelentes materiales puede durar muchos años, he visto obras que hemos realizado años atrás que están en buen estado, intactas a pesar de que tienen mas de 8 años y esto es gracias a que trabajamos con excelentes materiales y en otros casos duran bastante tiempo los murales debido a la ubicación en la que se encuentre el muro, ubicaciones donde no están expuesto tanto tiempo al sol directo. Por otra parte, si son murales realizados con materiales de baja calidad pueden durar un par de años o menos dependiendo de la exposición al sol a la que se someta la superficie, sobre todo en verano que el sol suele ser mas intenso.

¿Qué crees que primero piensa o siente la gente cuando ve una de tus obras en la calle?

Wow, que interesante pregunta, en realidad no lo se, y espero que piensen o sientan cosas positivas las cuales inviten al crecimiento, respeto, autoconocimiento, empatía, solemos hacer todas las obras con las mejores intenciones, solemos trabajar en función a nuestro propio trabajo y al arte, pero todo esto lo hacemos desde una manera respetuosa la cual invite a unir y crecer.

Sabemos el impacto que tienen una obra de arte en los espacios públicos y es una responsabilidad muy grande para todos los que intervenimos dichos espacios, es algo que hay que tomar en consideración desde el inicio hasta la finalización de cada proyecto, desde mi punto de vista no podemos ser tan invasivos ni dictatoriales ya que es una obra para todos.

¿Tienes algún secreto que te gustaría compartir con nosotros?

Suelo levantarme muy temprano.

¿Cuáles son tus planes creativos para el futuro?

Por los momentos tenemos programadas varias exposiciones este año y algunos proyectos estarán en marcha próximamente, así que estaremos en el taller dándole formas a las nuevas ideas.

¿Hay algún pensamiento o mensaje específico que le gustaría transmitir a nuestra audiencia?

Que hagan lo que les de la gana, lo que quieran, pero respetando a las demás personas y a la naturaleza, que hagan lo que les guste y apasione, sin importar lo que hagan los demás, sin importar lo que digan los demás, que se enamoren de la vida y que cada camino es diferente para cada quien, cada camino es único e inigualable, lo bonito es que podemos construir nosotros mismos nuestro propio camino, ya queda de nuestra parte que tan bonito lo queramos y con que materiales lo construyamos.
