EVASIONES. THE STREET AS FICTION check the website

September 28, 2024 to November 23, 2024

Evasiones‘: B-Murals and Indague reveal the most unknown and reflective side of graffiti and urban art. The exhibition aims to offer visitors a creative and reflective pause, stepping away from contemporary dynamics dominated by media consumption and social networks.

Through urban art and graffiti, tensions are explored between artistic autonomy and its integration into mainstream culture, addressing everything from hyper-commercialization to the interaction with new technologies, the assimilation of mainstream, or conceptual vandalism—practices deeply tied to the expansion of urban subcultures and countercultures.

This collective expo presents works that challenge the stereotypes of urban art, promoting new ways of understanding it. In this context, the street becomes a unique space for representation, simulation, and social construction, where creative realities and fictions are articulated, defining its aesthetic, function, and cultural relevance. These artistic practices, rooted in the urban environment, foster divergent thinking, open critical debates, and legitimize expressions that have been marginalized or confined.

Evasiones. The Street as Fiction’ is thus presented as a curatorial exercise that not only documents these dynamics but also invites a reconsideration of how urban art interacts with public spaces and its value within the contemporary art discourse. The project aims to relocate these manifestations outside the conventional framework of traditional exhibitions, offering a critical and novel perspective that documents and reflects on the forms of evasion emerging in these creative environments.

The show is aimed at both scholars and researchers in the art world and anyone interested in discovering the most human, unknown, and reflective aspects of graffiti and urban art. The opening will take place on September 28th from 6 pm to 9 pm. Admission is free, and some of the artists featured in the exhibition will be attending, along with a live performance by musician Enric Ponsa. The exhibition will be open until November 23rd and parallel activities will be organized for all audiences.

ARTISTS

The exhibition will feature the work of renowned artists from the scene, including Sebas VelascoAmpparito & Irene LunaLes Frères RipoulainVandals On HolidaysMaz & Riaq Miuq (Alén do Cascallo), FMFJean Philippe IllanesYoni and Sonja Ben.

The piece by Les Frères Ripoulain explores the relationship between the media and graffiti, providing a critical perspective on the representation of this subculture over time. Sebas Velasco, meanwhile, presents a work that uses photography and video, exemplifying his lived passion for extracting contexts and experiencing processes, while Vandals On Holidays explores technological possibilities to create a visual narrative that transcends the boundaries of branding.

The project Alén do Cascallo by Maz and Riaq Miuq connects the material and the ritual in a creation that plays with anthropology and urban intervention. FMF brings an industrial recycling proposal, combining illustration and ceramics, the product of his ‘creative dungeon’. Bricolage, serialization, humor, and the conceptual are present in the work of Ampparito and Irene Luna, who reinterpret everyday objects such as construction sacks, while Jean Philippe Illanes invites reflection on consumption and modern life through his documentary collection of purchase receipts.

The economy of means, biographical elements, and social commitment are part of Yoni’s work, a statement of intent through antistyle. Sonja Ben rounds out the exhibition with a large-format piece that fuses scriptural and pictorial elements, drawing directly from the urban context for its execution.

INDAGUE is the Spanish Association for the Research and Dissemination of Graffiti and Urban Art, dedicated to the study and documentation of these creative expressions, particularly those not regulated in public spaces. Its objectives include exploring the historical, cultural, aesthetic, and political aspects of graffiti and urban art, improving the pedagogical methods and preservation of these works, promoting collaborative projects, and establishing a resource network to foster nationwide research. Additionally, it seeks to become a reference between artistic scenes and academic fields, fostering relationships with other organizations and institutions.
