Khaled Barakeh, a Berlin-based Syrian-born conceptual artist. I’m the founder and director of coculture, a nonprofit organisation rooted in the intersectionality between art, activism, and community building. With our partners, Impunity Watch, we are developing a multifaceted project titled “Art for Justice & Accountability.” As part of this, we are excited to invite you to collaborate on the Reincarnation project.
Reincarnation is a multi-city project that reincarnates some of the most iconic Syrian graffiti pieces to new locations and commissions new graffiti pieces in Syria and Ukraine. The project brings Syrian and Ukrainian graffiti artists together with their European counterparts, replicating iconic pieces and/or creating new pieces in various Western cities to highlight the ongoing intersectional struggles and resistance. It delves into transforming public spaces, employing reincarnation as a metaphor for the perpetual rebirth of resistance and resilience. A project pilot happened last year in Malmö; you can read about it here.
We are reaching out because we are looking for these five artists’ groups/individuals to commission, hoping to be one of them. Here is some first practical information:
– Based on a conversation with graffiti artists (in Syria or Ukraine) and ourselves, we will discuss the content of the graffiti piece that you will create.
– As an honorary thank you, we offer a budget of 800€ as the artist fee, and 300€ is the production cost.
– You will take care of applying for permits, following production, and sending us documentation of the artwork.
The documentation must be delivered by September 15th. Our partners and we will launch the project online in October.
We would highly appreciate your prompt response, and we look forward to the possibility of collaborating with you!
Kindly,
Khaled

You may consider a modest donation — however much you can afford, when it comes from the heart, it’s the kind of gesture that makes us warm with appreciation.
