STMTS, the fine arts student who silently decorates walls in the capital of Greece. His works have been seen by thousands of Athenian by passers and have been loved by the media. Still, few really know who the artist is. We contacted him, making an interview that reveals the thoughts and dreams of this young creative upcoming artist.
-So who is STMTS?
Hmm..I am an 20 years old guy from Athens Greece, I am studying fine arts. I love drawing, and painting! STMTS comes from my real name Stamatis (STaMaTiS), a greek name. I used to write STMTS from school just for having fun like a nickname.
-How do you define yourself? Artist? Street artist? Anything else?
I don’t know ,I don’t like labels..I just like to make paintings and do some stuff in the public area.. I like a lot the streets but also the studio works.
– How did it all start for you, and what is it nowadays?
I was a restless guy.. I didn’t like so much the school..I ‘ve been always attracted by the urban culture..music, skateboard etc.. In the last years of school I was always drawing in the class and so finally I chose that painting would be my path. Now I am very happy that I am doing what I love and I like the university …I paint every day and many hours.
-What is the first thing you do when you get up in the morning?
Just pushing the play button in the music player.
-In all forms of art, inspiration is crucial. What inspires you?
The problems of our days and the questions which are created through them…also the daily life, the history and even the music.
-Do you have an artist you admire and what is the reason?
There are a lot..the last days I focused in the works of Gustave Dore…He was just a genius!
-Which cities do you think are the most inspirational in Street Art?
I think its New York, Los Angeles, Miami, London, Lisbon, Berlin.
-Do you have other passions apart from art?
Yes I like cooking, I love the good food generally, also listening to music, reading art books, chilling with friends and travelling .
-Does your art include symbolisms, messages or repeated patterns?
Yes many, most times I want to pass messages through my artworks… rarely symbolisms.
-What is your reaction when you realise someone has vandalised your creation?
I have accepted that before I do an artwork in a public area, someday it will be destroyed. So, I am reconciled with that..When I do a project in the streets, I take many good photos and videos.
-What do you think people first think or feel when they see one of your works on the street?
I don’t know.. but of course, I would like them to think or feel something positive.
– If you were a president what would you change in this world?
Anything that brings unhappiness, injustice, misery, sadness , generally anything bad.
-Do you have any interesting creative plans for the future?
I will keep doing my thing…I want to focus more and more on my work and evolve it as much as possible.. I want to take part in a lot of projects, cooperations and do some travels! I Just always want to be in a creative mood!
We wish you just that , a creative mood! Thank you.
