After the first edition’s success, which took the name of Leiria worldwide as an example of excellence of urban public art, the 2nd edition happened from Sept 8 to Oct 7th and proved once again to be a unique event of street art.
As in the previous edition, the event included:
• Artistic interventions on medium and large facades as well as exhibitions by national and international well known artists that link their artistic language to urban art, as they will live and feel our city in artistic residences during the event;
• The congress “Arte Urbana no Plural”, was attended by researchers from different academic areas (social sciences, art studies, architecture, visual studies, communication sciences, etc.) and the involvement of Portuguese academic institutions and associations of excellency;
• As well as the development of other parallel activities.
“Leiria, paredes com história: ARTE PÚBLICA” is a public art event organized by the association Riscas Vadias, in partnership with Câmara Municipal de Leiria, and curated by Ricardo Romero | Projecto Matilha.
More than an artistic event, the “Leiria, walls with history: PUBLIC ART” intends to be a possibility for Leiria and a possible future.
The event finds its justification in the undeniable preponderant role that urban public art currently assumes in Portugal and in the world, in the inventive and inclusive character that art and culture can and should take on in the creation of the future / hope of any society.
But it also finds its relevance in Leiria, in its characteristics, specificities and singularities, in its weight and scope, not only as physical territory, municipality and district capital, but, essentially, as a land of dreamy, creative, enterprising and working people.
The artistic aspect of the event – interventions and exhibitions – has the mail goal, the affirmation of Leiria as an “art gallery” in a new artistic / cultural tourism scene of national and international scope, and recognition of this as an obligatory visit point in the urban public art tour; promote the creation and dissemination of urban public art; and the affirmation and recognition of the identity of Leiria through the representation and homage to the historical heritage (built and natural), to intangible heritage and to historical figures from Leiria.
As for the congress, this is an opportunity for a diffusion of knowledge about the phenomenon of art in the community, as well as a reflection on the role and importance of art in the spheres of education and social inclusion.
“Leiria, paredes com história: ARTE PÚBLICA” will also be an event of a character of responsibility, concern and sustainability, assuming itself as an eco-event, through a cooperation agreement with Valorlis.
The commitment to reduce the environmental impact and promote the proper management of the waste resulting from the various stages of the event is assumed through the implementation of concrete measures, such as: implementing environmental awareness actions among all participants; opt for a communication strategy that follows the principle of dematerialization, favoring digital marketing; optimize the material resources used, considering their potential for reuse and / or recycling; place mini Eco points in the places of the artistic interventions and exhibition spaces; gather as much data as possible to calculate the carbon footprint; plant native trees to compensate for carbon emissions.
You may consider a modest donation — however much you can afford, when it comes from the heart, it’s the kind of gesture that makes us warm with appreciation.
