On 9 April Greenpeace and Rebobinart joined forces for the action “Save the Arctic”. Climate change, destructive fishing practices and oil industry are jeopardizing the Arctic ecosystem.
Given this scenario, Greenpeace wanted to make an appeal to raise public awareness of this pressing problem.
Rebobinart launched a call for artists to paint the public walls managed by Murs Lliures, a system that manages public spaces in Barcelona to paint legally. More than 650 artists applied and 32 of them were selected and painted 900 linear meters with colourful and powerful messages reflecting a great support for the cause.
Apart from the works executed by the artists, children, adults and everyone who wanted to get involved in this initiative, made a collective wall under the motto “Save the Arctic”. Many passers-by joined the initiative and showed great interest on this movement’s hopes, wishes and desires for the protection of the Arctic.
Greenpeace has also launched a worldwide contest to draw, paint or design a poster with a creative vision of the Arctic. All posters will be used to send the message of Arctic protection to politicians and decision makers and the winning artists will also have the experience of a lifetime: a journey to the Norwegian Arctic with Greenpeace.
Greenpeace’s defense of the Arctic has been a major theme for years and the organization has carried out many actions in order to raise public awareness. This time, the NGO has come together with urban art in order to give this initiative new visibility. Rebobinart supports this campaign not only because of the urgent need to act upon the problem, but also because of the social and civic implication that the action entailed, a philosophy that we fully share with the environmental organization.
The collaboration of Rebobinart with Greenpeace has proved that public space is a powerful tool for social expression and political claim through art. This initiative has shown that the use of public space as a cohesive and socially engaging place is possible and, above all, extraordinarily useful. The massive participation of artists and passers-by highlights the synergic capacity of the public space generating a civic response to political and social causes.
It is for all these reasons that we believe that this initiative has delivered the expected results and we hope that the support offered by Rebobinart will be yet another step towards the preservation of the Arctic.
